About the Essex Housing Authority

Essex Court offers affordable public housing for seniors and the disabled. We manage thirty-six garden-style apartments. Eight apartments are suitable for a family of two. The remaining are efficiencies, for one person.  Apartments feature galley kitchens with refrigerator and range. Every apartment is connected to a fire/smoke alarm system and equipped with an emergency call-for-aide system. Our community building is air conditioned and has a fully-equipped kitchen, a library annex of the Essex Public Library, a piano and a separate laundry room

Our grounds are especially lovely, with flowering trees and shrubs, a gazebo, benches and a community flower garden that surrounds an illuminated flag pole. Our property is within walking distance of a grocery store and deli, a pharmacy, a dry cleaners, three restaurants, a garden shop and several other services. We are visited by Meals on Wheels, public transportation and other senior services organizations.

The Essex Housing Authority is a member of NAHRO, the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials and has adopted its Code of Professional Conduct.

Pursuant to Section 8-40 of the Connecticut General Statutes, the Essex Housing Authority was organized to remedy a shortage of safe and sanitary dwelling accommodations for elderly persons at rents which they can afford to pay. Our original allocation from the State of Connecticut Bond Commission is dated December 1981. Our original Certificate of Occupancy was granted by the State in July 1985.

The Essex Housing Authority is governed by a five-member volunteer Board of Commissioners, including a tenant commissioner. Commissioners must be residents of Essex. We are a separate public body corporate and politic. Our budget is not part of the town’s budget.

Our commission oversees Essex Court, the affordable senior housing complex at 16 Main Street, Centerbrook. The commissioners hold regular Board meetings on the third Monday of each month, at 3:00 PM, at Essex Court. These meetings are open to the public. The commission employs a management company, Faith Asset Management, and an onsite Facility Manager to manage day-to-day operations.
